Camal & Camille - Family Matters

September 2023

Family Matters (2017) is an Afrofuturist video and sound installation following a mother and son who have escaped enslavement in 19th-century town of York (now known as Toronto) by time travelling to contemporary Toronto. Family Matters also includes a series of editioned photographs.

Camal Pirbhai & Camille Turner are two artists who work together as the collaborative art duo Camal & Camille.

Camal & Camille began creating art together after they met while participating in the exhibition Fashionality at the McMichael Gallery. The inspiration for much of their work is exposing hidden histories. An educational component is often included with each body of work to expand on the ideas on which it is based and to bring the history to light.

They are known for their work which examines our society; who is visible and who is not visible from a Canadian History perspective. Performance, video, lightbox images, lenticular prints and large-scale photographs.all play a part in sharing this history.
