Paper Pusher

Ottawa is a city with a somewhat deserved reputation as a sleepy government town.  Where, presumably, civil servants spend their days shuffling paper in concentric patterns. This thinly upheld stereotype becomes a just backdrop for the exhibition, Paper Pusher.

Paper Pusher brings together artists with complex art practices and wealth of experience. This has enabled each of these artists, within the larger context of their own various continuing projects, to produce work on paper that goes beyond the established rule.

Pushing not the obvious limits of the physical material. Pushing not the immeasurable horde of signed numbered reproductions that fuel some parallel art economy. Pushing in fact the boundaries of what would be perceived as a work on paper. Paper Pusher questions standardization and challenges set traditions of size, shape, and source. 

The way in which each artist affects the material is paramount to any preconceived parameters of paper. The subtleties and nuance of idea occupy our thoughts. All the while the substrate withstands acknowledgement.
